Marbella is one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain. Considered the “capital” of the western Costa del Sol, it’s seafront location lends itself to its excellent climate conditions and beautiful surroundings.

The challenge

The Marbella City Council set two fundamental strategies to improve the area’s tourism sector. On one hand, they sought to reduce the disparity of demand created by the high and low tourism seasons and to replace it with a more stable demand across the year. On the other, they looked to increase the average spending per visitor in their city. All this just before the pandemic!

Olocip has developed a system that centralises numerous tourism-related variables onto a single platform. One of the modules developed breaks down historical trend data and seasonality to identify the extent to which the time of year affects each variable, thus providing all the necessary data to make the best decision going forward. Furthermore, an artificial intelligence system has been developed to predict what would have happened if there had been no pandemic. This tool allows them to quantify the extent to which covid-19 has affected each of the City Council’s variables.
